If you are using a slower connection to the Internet, some of my pages may take 30 seconds or longer to load.  I've sized most pages for a screen resolution of 800x600 pixels and tried to maintain image quality at the same time. Slide or photo Viewing Tip: In Internet Explorer, use the F11 Key to toggle for a larger screen viewing area. I don't know if Netscape can do the same thing.

Plains Bison - Elk Island National Park Elk Island National Park

is a short drive east of Edmonton, Alberta on the Yellowhead Highway (Highway 16). Canada's only completely fenced National Park sits in a transition zone between the aspen parkland and the boreal forest.

I've talked with European visitors who believe this is true wilderness. When I lay back in my canoe, in the middle of Astotin Lake and listen to the loons calling, and close my eyes, I just might agree with them. If you can visit during the middle of the week, it may seem like you have the park all to yourself.

I've seen a bittern several times in the pond just southwest of the campground area, but only in the spring when his distinctive call helps in finding him.

Fire - May 3, 2004
A Few Photos: The fire started on Friday, and by Monday, over 11 square kilometers had burned. There were only a few hot spots left. Also view some follow up photos after the fire.

"The born naturalist is one of the most lucky men in the world. Winter or summer, rain or shine, at home or abroad, walking or riding, his pleasures are always near at hand. The great book of nature is open before him and he has only to turn its leaves."
                                                                     - John Burroughs
